Awesome Things: Nubian Peak

June 11th, 2008

The VT radar has picked up on committed awesomeness that is Nubian Peak. Big ups to Nubian for keeping local- don’t fret, young one. Even though Blacksburg has its share of Wades Supermarkets, I promise its far enough to make you feel some distance from ol Pulaski. No need to go to California or Florida or Charlottesville.

Here’s a highlight real that the Brooklyn Hokies for a Better Society (The Bro-Ho BS) found on Nubian’s potential awesomeness. Nubian: the Bro-Ho BS suggests you please go the route of Kevin Jones, and not Brandon “the bore” Ore. Thanks.

Plant & Krauss: “Battle of Evermore”

June 11th, 2008

Last night, I was fortunate enough to see Robert Plant & Alison Krauss do their thing at MSG’s Theatre. One of the highlights was them trading off verses during “Battle of Evermore,” a most fantastic Zep song. Here’s the best vid I could find of the complete version. Mandolins make things better.

Update: I wrote this here review.

The official start to summer in New York isn’t Memorial Day. It’s ninety degree temps, BBQ straight from Yazoo City, Miss. and Las Vegas via the Big Apple BBQ Festival.

Sigur Ros: “Með suð i eyrum við spilum endalaust

June 8th, 2008

I used to go to Tower Records to hear new albums. I’d walk around for hours at a time, going from listening station to listening station. Now, this. No wonder they closed.

Garcia: “We’re All Big People Now”

June 5th, 2008

AD pointed me to this clip of the Dead on Playboy’s After Dark, back in 69. It’s great to see Jerry in this setting; not because of the absurdity of Hef’s “serious” questioning about the death of the hippie scene, but how much of a sense of humor Jerry seems to have with all of it.

Things I noticed and subsequently enjoyed:

  • Phil’s coke-bottle glasses
  • Bobby’s grin towards the end of “Mountains Of The Moon”
  • Haight-Ashbury is just a street
  • Many of today’s popular folkies- mainly Devendra and Vetiver, remind me so much of Garcia during the aforementioned “Mountains.”
